Air Show #2, 1988
This image has a unique provenance. Decades ago I photographed an air show at a local fair using black and white film. When I returned to my studio I misplaced the camera body and it was inadvertently placed in a filing box and sent to long term storage. Years later I found the body and realized it still had film in it and sent it to the lab for processing. When the technician called me he had excitement in his voice "you should come here and see this before we cut the strips"
The camera's storage place was not climate controlled. Over the years the fluctuation in temperature and humidity caused mold to grow on the film. The process of development and fixing it arrested the mold and crystallized it in its place. The eerie blossoms on these frames are organic, they make the bi-plane seem it is traveling on another planet. To recreate this outcome again would be impossible, they are a gift from nature.
There are three images in this Air Show series all from the same strip of 35mm film. because of the organic nature of the silver nitrate emulsions deterioration, each image of the series has a unique personality.
