In 1975 I began to experiment with 2 1/4 medium format cameras, mostly shooting black and white. One day in the early fall my college roommate and I decided to get up before light and shoot the sunrise at a bog that was close to our townhouse. We were surprised to see that it had been drained. The heavy fog that morning made shooting the sunrise impossible but I got this image instead.

There was no digital scanning technology in 1975 so the first print ever made of this image was in a darkroom and it was hard to get any detail from behind the mist. When I recently scanned the 38 year old original negative with todays state of the art technology I saw a whole new vista. and the trees in the background popped into view making it a far more interesting photograph. The information was always there, however it took 4 decades of technological advances to pull it out. At least 4 photographic technicians worked on this image to bring it to life. Today photography is an alchemy of art and science!
