Ilulissat Greenland. Iiulissat is the native word for "Icebergs" This is an image from the largest glacier in the Northern hemisphere. It is believed that the iceberg that sunk the Titanic "calved" or broke off from this mass of ice. The cave in the centre of the image was carved out by a primordial river that could be thousands of years old. This underground river accommodated the summer melt that occurred on the surface of the glacier. The water poured down into it from "moulins" or holes on the glaciers surface. I call this photo "Supermans's Cave" I remember waiting for for him to fly out while I slowly approached the glaciers edge in the boat I had hired. You may think I was close to the ice but to give you a sense of how majestic in size this place is, I was actually 1 1/2 miles from the ice when I took this photograph.
