The surface of Greenland is void of life. Not even an insect inhabits this massive pristine ice surface. When a meteorite falls to the ice in July or August the intense heat of the sun is absorbed by the dark object and melts the snow around it. The blue water absorbs more heat and soon there is a river that becomes a lake, and this all happens in a matter of hours. The lakes become so heavy they split the ice and flush down a mile and a half to the primordial rock surface of Greenland and provide the lubricant that lets the glaciers flow into the oceans.
